Inner Work

For the week of: December 2, 2002

Consuming

The all-consuming fire of greed can color our whole existence. When we conflate what we want with what we truly need, the ravenous flames render satisfaction transitory at best. Looking toward that next bite of chocolate cake, we fail to taste the one in our mouth. The siren song of advertising breeds discontent. That perfectly functional five-year old car starts to look long in the tooth. Our comfortable home pales next to images of lavishly appointed mini-mansions. Suddenly our paycheck seems too small. We question the wisdom of settling for less than we might otherwise get.

For this week, explore the difference between what you need and what you want. How much of your life do you devote to getting what you do not need?
