Inner Work

For the week of: January 13, 2003

Back in the Body

Without regular work at presence in our body, our spirituality tends to lose its steadiness, maturity, and reality. Can you imagine trying to develop your soul without having a body? But the life of our body is limited, defining the length of our opportunity to practice while in this world of space and time. Of course, our growing soul transcends our physical presence. However, the development of soul arises out of our body, step by step.

And the first, basic, and continuing step consists of sensing and inhabiting our body as deeply, as often, and as long as possible. Sensing this body grounds us in the present. That matters because the whole spiritual reality can only be accessed through this present moment. So regardless of how long we have practiced and how far we have come, the work on continuing contact with the energy of the body remains important. The energy body offers the first threshold toward the spiritual heights. The work of sensing lies within our possibilities and is a necessity for us if we wish to deepen our soul.

So from time to time, even as we seek to enter the spiritual, we come back to the body, to review, assess, and renew our work on sensing, on the energy body.
