Inner Work

For the week of: March 3, 2003

small self and Great Self

How can God act through me, how can I serve truly, if “I” am busy serving myself, concerned exclusively with my own well-being? God’s Will does not operate by overpowering our individual will, but only in cooperation with our surrendered will. When I am angry at something done to me, or when I am worried about what might happen to me, or when I am taken by a desire for more, my will focuses on self-referential obsessions. My self-engaged will usurps the place where I could be engaged with the Great Self of God, Which includes us all in our uniqueness. The arrow of engagement can point either to self or to Self, but not both at the same time.

Notice how your interest and passion habitually and continually flow toward yourself and perhaps against others. See this at work, in particular moments, and make the effort, the instantaneous decision to let go of your concern with your self, to make way for the Great Self.
