Inner Work For the week of: March 31, 2003 Inner Work in a Time of War
Regardless of their views of the justifiability or necessity of any particular
war, everyone agrees that war causes great suffering. Even those not directly
affected by the war feel its anger, hatred, fear, anxiety, outrage, hysteria, or
an irresistible fascination with it. All of this pollutes the emotional
atmosphere. If in the midst of this raging storm, some people continue or even
redouble their spiritual practice, they help create an antidote to the
destructive tone of the times. By relinquishing our own anger and fear, our
anxiety and blame, we become the bearers of inner peace and compassion, helping
clear the poisoned atmosphere that we all share. Transforming the raging
emotional energies released by war, we turn them, through our inner work, into a
force for presence and kindness.
