Inner Work

For the week of: August 25, 2003

Dignity and Indignation

True dignity flows from presence, warmth of heart, openness, self-acceptance and service to a higher purpose. False dignity flows from egoistic self-centeredness, and presents a demand to the world, an insistence on deference. True dignity naturally elicits the respect of others, while false dignity imposes a requirement of respect from others. True dignity acts with grace and kindness, while false dignity grasps to fill the egoism at its core, egoism of attachment to a virtual, non-existent self.

True dignity remains untouched by insults, while the flag of indignation alerts us to an affront to our false dignity. For this week, notice your indignation and the glimpse of your own egoism it affords.
