Inner Work

For the week of: September 8, 2003

Bridging Heaven and Earth

We humans occupy a crucial link in the spiritual ecosystem: our animal nature arising from the Earth and our spark of Divinity descending from Heaven. The role of bridging Heaven and Earth represents our destiny, if we choose to fulfill it. A good bridge carries two-way traffic. And so the spiritually developed person can transform energies from the Earth and offer them upward, while also serving as a bearer of the higher sacred on the Earth.

But what does this mean in practical terms? Outwardly it means right and moral action as embodied in the contemporary Christian phrase: What Would Jesus Do? Our goal of always doing the right thing imposes a demanding self-discipline on us. Yet this is only the beginning of fulfilling our role of bridging Heaven and Earth. Spiritual practices lead us to create the inner bridge, the true bridge. Prayer and meditation, for example, directly address those inner possibilities.

For this week, see how you can better fulfill your role as a bridge between Heaven and Earth. What does your conscience tell you in this regard?
