Inner Work

For the week of: September 15, 2003

The Eye of the Storm

Life rages all around us: the demands of performing our duties to our body, family, and society; the emotional reactions to untoward events large and small; the thoughts and opinions, debates and arguments; the unexpected episodes, both welcome and unwelcome. Yet it remains possible for us, through our spiritual practice, to step into the eye at the center of the storm of life, while remaining fully engaged.

The step is an inward step, outside of thoughts, outside of emotions, outside of sensory experience, into a place of utter peace and natural joy. This step into pure awareness, pure consciousness releases us, at least temporarily, from all that drags us down. Conversely, by relinquishing attachments and identification, we step toward the freedom to live in the peace at the center of life, at the center of our being.

For this week, look within your awareness and take the step toward peace. First, explore to find the direction. Where is inner peace? Then, step into it. Then learn to abide in it.

This is not the end of the road for our spiritual work. In fact, this place of peace, this eye of the storm, is the place where God may draw us close. We return from peace, in peace, to serve.
