Making It Real

On the spiritual path, actual practice makes the difference. Thoughts, dreams, hopes, plans, intentions, strong feelings, and beautiful ideas do not change our being. Learning to be in touch with our feelings, to feel good about ourselves, or to communicate better does not move us a step closer to transformation. Even the inspiration we draw from a great spiritual teacher does not in itself advance us along the path.

Wholehearted prayer, presence, contact with our body, meditation, letting go of attachments, acts of kindness: these are the types of actions that deepen our being, form our soul, and open us to the power of grace. Perseverance in such practices actually profits our soul. The rest -- dreams, intentions, and so forth -- is fluff.

For this week, make your spiritual work real.
