Inner Work

For the week of March 28, 2005

A Steady Pace

Step by step, we walk our path toward the Divine. But if we take frequent and extensive detours or stop for lengthy vacations from our inner work, we lose our momentum and tend to regress. Even our understanding seems to evaporate as we forget the tastes of presence and warm-hearted devotion. If we rely on crises, extraordinary experiences, or temporary peaks to set us running toward the spirit, the energy soon dissipates and our progress is fitful at best. But by putting one foot in front of the other, by keeping to a steady pace of daily spiritual practice, the accumulating weight of our dedication and effort slowly and surely builds our soul, transforming us with a reliable anchor in presence and heart.

But while we do seek a steady day-to-day pace, we also strive to accelerate that pace gradually. Each year our inner world should be more vibrant than the previous year. The more we enter the spirit, the more our devotion and obligation to that spirit grows. As our engagement in the process of spiritual evolution advances, we begin to entrust our aspirations, our very life to the Sacred One. And the steady pace of practice becomes our home and our refuge, our breath and our most immediate nourishment. Without it we stumble about, flat and empty. With it our horizons merge with the Boundless.

For this week, assess your practice in terms of its peaks and valleys, and work to create a steadfast orientation toward the path of the spirit.
