Seeing Their Potential
Around the dimension of actual
and potential, we have this strange double-standard in our attitude toward
people. We give ourselves the benefit of the doubt in assessing our own
actual behavior because we rightly credit ourselves with having such amazing
potential for the future. We define ourselves more by our potential future
than by our actual present. But with other people, we often feel critical
of their actual manifestations and discount their potential to change
or improve. We look at the surface of a person and define them thereby.
This attitude of ours arises from and perpetuates our inner isolation
from people.
For this week, look past the
surface of other people and see their potential.
