Inner Work

For the week of: February 23, 2004

First Intention

When you first wake up in the morning, even before you get out of bed, take the opportunity to set the tone for the day. Practice awareness of the sensation in your body, or awareness of your breathing, or overall presence for a few moments. Notice the residue of your dreams and preoccupations in your thoughts and emotions. Then create your intention to pursue your inner work throughout the day. Be specific.

When you do get out of bed, do so with full awareness of the sensations in your body, of your movements as you get up, of your first steps as you walk away from the bed. Keep up this work of sensing as long as possible: while you brush your teeth, etc., while you get dressed, while you eat breakfast.

Beginning this way will transform the tenor and possibilities of the whole day.

For this week, start your day with the intention to practice presence.
